The story
Thebes, the No-Amon of Scripture, was the great capital of Upper Egypt far up the Nile, the house of the god Amun with his vast temples at Karnak. She sat secure among her canals, rich and defended, the pride of the south.
Yet the armies of Assyria stormed Thebes and carried her wealth away. Nahum held up her fall as a warning to Nineveh, for if mighty No-Amon with all her allies could be broken, so could the city on the Tigris.

- The Exile · in ruins. Sacked by Ashurbanipal of Assyria in 663 BC; Nahum held its fall before Nineveh.
