The story
Hebron sits high in the hills of Judah, where Abraham pitched his tent by the oaks of Mamre. When Sarah died he bought the cave of Machpelah from Ephron the Hittite for a burying place, and there Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and their wives were laid to rest.
Caleb, the faithful spy, asked for Hebron in his old age and drove out its giants. Here David was anointed king over Judah and reigned seven years before he took Jerusalem, and from this same city Absalom later raised the standard of his revolt.
