Ur → Haran → Canaan
The first family of the covenant followed the LORD out of Ur, up the long curve of the Euphrates to Haran, and down into Canaan. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob lived there as strangers, holding to a promise of a land not yet theirs.

The story
The road began in Ur, near the mouth of the Euphrates, where Abraham’s people had served other gods. Terah led the family north to Haran, and there the LORD called Abraham on, to a land He would show him. So Abraham came into Canaan and pitched his tent at Shechem, at Bethel, at Hebron, and at Beersheba, a wanderer in the country that would one day belong to his children.
Nothing came quickly. Sarah waited until she was ninety for the son God had promised, and even then the family lived in tents among the Canaanites, buying only a cave at Hebron to bury their dead. Isaac stayed in the land, but Jacob had to flee it, wrestling with God at the Jabbok before he came home as Israel. The fathers held the promise without ever holding the land.
This was the beginning of everything that followed: a people who belonged to the LORD before they had a country or a king. Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness, and so the Scriptures call him the father of all who believe. The whole story of Israel, and the gospel after it, traces back to one man leaving Ur on the strength of a promise.
