The story

Somewhere in the wilderness stands the mountain that Scripture calls both Sinai and Horeb, where the LORD first met Moses in a bush that burned and was not consumed and called the ground holy. Its exact peak is no longer known for certain, though tradition has long pointed to the granite heights of the southern Sinai.

Here Israel camped, and the LORD came down in fire and cloud and thunder to give the Ten Words and the covenant, and the pattern of the tabernacle. And here, generations later, the prophet Elijah fled from Jezebel and heard the LORD not in the wind or the fire but in a still small voice.
