The story

Erech, the ancient Uruk, was among the very first cities of the earth, part of the beginning of Nimrod’s kingdom in the plain of Shinar along with Babel and Accad. It was a huge walled city of the far south, one of the cradles of settled life.

Scripture names Erech only in passing, yet it stands with Babel at the dawn of the kingdoms of men after the Flood. Long after, its people, the men of Erech, were among those the Assyrians uprooted and resettled in the ruined towns of Samaria.
