The story

Mount Carmel is a wooded ridge that runs down to the sea near the bay of Haifa, long a byword for beauty and fruitfulness. On its heights stood an old altar of the LORD that had been thrown down in the years of Baal.

Here Elijah gathered all Israel and the prophets of Baal and called down fire from heaven upon the drenched altar, so that the people fell on their faces and cried, the LORD, He is God. Then Elijah prayed until a little cloud rose from the sea and the long drought broke in rain.
