The story
When the waters of the flood receded, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat on the seventeenth day of the seventh month. From its window Noah sent out the raven and the dove, and when the earth was dry he came out with his sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth, built an altar to the LORD, and received the covenant of the bow in the clouds.
In later Scripture Ararat is a land and a kingdom, the highland realm the Assyrians called Urartu. The sons of Sennacherib fled there after striking down their father, and Jeremiah summoned its kingdom, with Minni and Ashkenaz, against Babylon. Scripture names the range rather than a single peak; the identification with the great mountain that now bears the name is the tradition of later generations.
